polishing

this was the best dish in my opinion. the onions and the pasta thing - really really delicious! hidden under all that is pork.

calm before we started eating
truthfully, we finished the food in double quick time. not sure if it's because we were hungry, or it was just too delicious!

all that's left is gout food (spinach) and lots and lots of butter...

Gasthof Engel in Lindau

Heidi recommended this restaurant to us, and fortunately it was just next to our hotel The Medusa. It took us minutes to find the place, but a long long wait to get a table, order, and for the food to arrive (it think it was 40 mins). in a fairly empty restaurant. The elderly 'waitress' could not speak English, and menu was in German. She could only say last order at 9. You have to ask wei what he asked the waitress - very naughty of him!

It was our lucky day that a German guy entertaining his Canadian friends at the next table came over to help us decipher the menu.

The wait was worth it. The food was very very good.

Cafe Aran on Constance

if you are ever in the town of Constance, you have to visit Cafe Aran. It's just next to the ferry terminal. Cafe's beautiful, sandwiches are simple and very very good. Helps that the servers are easy on the eye too ;)

Here's Vince going in to buy desserts and check out the, err, interior

warm seafood spread on bread. simple but unbelievably good.

finding german food

after checking in to our hotel in Uberlingen (only one available online as the summer tourist season and Eurobike caused an influx of visitors and all rooms are booked out. Thank goodness for the netbook and the Internet! Our only option was to take a 2 hour ferry from Constance to Uberlingen), we were starving (note - cakes for lunch only and serious riding in the cold rain) and had to find food. Good 'old German food - sausages, deep fried trotters, saukeraut, beer. you know, the healthy stuff.

It was odd that it was not easy to find a German restaurant (for some reason Uberlingen was covered with Greek restaurants. We were so happy to find one that served German food, German bier, and excellent service from the 2 German waiters (who spoke English!).

Stein am Rhein for lunch

This is a beautiful town I will remember for the wrong reason.

Heidi was kind enough to recommend some places for us to eat and we had to look for and stop at the Spath Cafe for lunch, for which wei ordered 3 large slices of cakes. No lunch. We jumped straight to dessert before rushing off to our next leg. It was a dessert place only :(

fabrice and heidi

we stayed on after all the guests have left and enjoyed ourselves so much chatting with the couple (but still no discount after all that networking. hahaha)

thanks for introducing us to Swiss food that's not Rosti (or anything Marche) Fabrice!

We invited them to Singapore. Yes. to open a restaurant. I could never get a table at Buko Nero. Maybe they will do us a favor and always keep a table for us. :)

13 points

set up 2.5 years ago "as a joke", Heidi and Fabrice ("ya ya ya") have come a long way. The restaurant (located in a 500 year old building) is well received in Shaffhausen and we found out why. They passed the jaded palates of wei, vince and me. We were not easily impressed, but we were. very. The restaurant has a 13 points rating (best in Shaffhausen has 18 points). If you are ever in IWC land, do have a meal there and say "HI" to the lovely couple on our behalf! www.wirtschaft-frieden.ch, t: +41(0)52 625 47 67, info@wirtschaft-frieden.ch

Heidi found a wine with no sulphites that I could drink! nice.

the perch caught from the lake was very good. we should have ordered seconds.

other dishes and the desserts were all very good. We were too busy enjoying ourselves with the food and company to remember to take all the pictures! :)

considering that Fabrice was self taught (he was a sous chef at the last restaurant Heidi and him worked together) the food was very good! YA YA YA!

meeting Heidi

yes we met Heidi! My first words were "Are you open?" Unfortunately the entrance to Frieden was badly lit, and the restaurant looked closed. At 8pm. Not a promising sign.

Heidi is part of a husband and wife team and owners of Frieden. Extremely knowledgeable about the food, wines from the region, and yes she speaks perfect English, we felt like we were in extremely good hands!

Another photo from dinner - there was so much choices to choose from. She introduced each and everyone in French. We pretended to understand. After that we just point and pick. :)

posing with the food

this is for Priscilla. Thank you for following the blog. Yes, we did pose with the food. Your brother did pose with many many things too. The sun was hotter than we expected. See my Oakley-designed tan line on my face? Sun Block after that. Definitely.

1 star Michelin

tonight was a night of extremes. 2 star hotel and 1 star restaurant. Yes our meal each cost more than the triple room rate...

Le Rendez-Vous de Chasse in Colmar. We had the best on the menu - 6 course (7 including the cheese selection) for 68 EUR in a Michelin star restaurant! UNBELIEVEABLE VALUE!

Iggy are you reading this?

lobster on the left, cold soup (very good), and tuna (not so good)
foie gras brulee style. very very good
langoustines, with potato puree and summer truffles
lamb cooked in 3 ways - slow cooked for 7 hours, usual (my favorite) and stewed
to cleanse the palate - champagne mousse
finale - excellent souffle (with cognac)

Amazing dinner and unforgettable, and then after the dinner it was back to our hotel... *&*^%$##@!!
